Defining Your Goals for the New Year

Happy New Year everyone!

This is not a post about new years resolutions. Studies have shown that people throw in the towel on their new years resolutions by JAN 14! THATS 2 WEEKS. Don't get me wrong - I love to see people with the best intentions and most people fail not because lack of effort, but how our goals are structured. Here comes in SMART Goals.

S- specific M- measurable A- actionable R- relevant T- time bound

I believe that it is important to set goals that you can work to accomplish throughout the year by implementing small habits every day that add up. Thank you compound effect! Let's talk about each part of the SMART acronym separately.

Specific

Making your goal specific isn't saying "I want to lose weight". It is important to know what specifically you want to accomplish in order for the goal to be considered a success. "I would like to lose 20 lbs by adding in small life style habits that will help me achieve this goal"

Measurable

It is important to make sure that you can measure your achievement by some sort of metric unit. I have used the example of lbs but it could be inches on a specific part of your body, etc.

Attainable

It is important to set realistic goals that you believe are attainable. I am not going to say I will make 1 million dollars by the end of the year because I don't have a plan - I don't bring in that much income and it is very unlikely that this goal can be reached by the end of the year. Be realistic and make a plan!

Relavant

It is important to make sure that our goals are relevant. If I am looking to lose weight I am not going to take classes on becoming a multi-millionaire. My habits are going to be relevant to my goal. Ex. I will drink 1L of water a day, I will meal prep on Sundays, I will add a vegetable to every meal.

Timely

Adding a time bound goal helps to keep you accountable. At least once a month I like to go over my habits that I have tracked to help see if I am on track with my goals and where to improve. I would highly recommend a habit tracker. (I will show mine at a later date if you are interested in how to create your own).

I have created a template for you to use if you want to create your goals using this method and watch yourself transform!

Have an amazing week friends! Meg
