Creating Your Own Home Gym

Writer's picture: Megan CugliettaMegan Cuglietta

I know when gyms shut down many people were stressing out. If you're anything like me you use fitness as a way to relieve stress. Luckily - I had already had a home workout space that I could utilize and I am forever grateful. I wanted to share my top 4 things that I think are beneficial to your home gym if you are just starting out and don't want to spend a lot of money to create this space. This is a realistic home gym, I spent a lot of time watching videos and fitness influencers have this amazing space with high ceilings and unfortunately that just isn't the reality for most of us. These are my key home gym necessities that are great for starting out creating your gym. This is for small spaces, extra bedrooms, basements, etc. Anywhere that you can transform into a gym space!

  1. Mats

I would highly recommend getting mats for your gym space. This ensures that you don't ruin your floors with weights, or shoes. I got a package on amazon that fit together like puzzle pieces and they are super affordable. I will put a photo of what they look like below - they come in a variety of prices.

2. Dumbbells

Now for dumbbells I always put them on my list because you can use them for a variety of workout moves. Freehand dumbbells allow you to work on legs (squats, lunges, etc.), as well as arms (curls, presses, etc.) If you are advanced I would recommend getting 10,15, and 20 lb weights. You want to make sure that you are advancing yourself and pushing yourself through your workouts. I have a 40 lb weight set that is adjustable. Taking these weight plates off allow me to have 5, 10, 15, 20, etc all the way up to 40 depending on what muscles I am working. If you are looking for a space saver, I know amazon has adjustable dumbbells that will definitely be my next purchase, they are on the. pricer side but it will be worth it if you require a more variety of weights.

3. Bands

Like our dumbbells I am a huge fan of bands. Bands work for you whether you are a beginner or advanced. They have different strengths and they are also multi-functional. You can work your arms with the bands and you can also wrap them around your thighs or ankles to work on our legs. In a future blog post I will post a full body workout that we can do with JUST bands and body weight.

4. Step

This is one I decided to add in because it is a cheap version of a cardio workout! Cardio equipment is expensive! And to be honest, running on a treadmill or elliptical is not my thing anyways. I love my spin classes ( I do have a spin bike that was an investment and my favourite stress relief.) But if you don't have the money and are looking for a way to work on your cardio a step is the perfect inexpensive option! There are tons of moves that you can use a step for if you google or pinterest it, its a fantastic way to strengthen your heart!

There are plenty of other things that you can add to your home gym but these 4 items are a great start. You want to protect your home with the mats and be able to do a variety of workouts for your entire body. Dumbbells, bands, and a step can create an amazing workout. This is a sustainable habit. I know motivation can sometimes be a struggle if you workout at home but check your local gym! I know I am currently teaching all of my classes online, so I know that you can get a killer workout in at home!
